TASK VII

To Dub or not to dub?

Dubbing is a common practice in Mexico. Most of the cartoons and series are made in other countries. The voices are very important. Voices are a part of a character. In Mexico we can identify each character with a specific voice. We can’t imagine Homero Simpson talking with another voice¡ When we go to the cinema it is a little difference. We can choose: subtitling or dubbing.

During the fascist regime there was an edict which prohibited films in any language other than Italian. Many American films were made again with Italian actors. Dubbing was created in the 30´s like an option to watch the original films in Italian. Dubbed films sometimes are better than original versions because they are adapted to our culture with Mexican humor. Usually, dubbing is made by famous actors, like Eugenio Derbez and Antonio Banderas in Shreck. Subtitled films let us learn more English. We can listen common expressions, pronunciation, etc. I think it is fantastic to listen original audio with all the emotion and emphasis on each and every dialog. By the other hand sometimes we can’t understand some jokes.

Subtitling and dubbing are not easy. That’s many schools are giving courses about dubbing, there is a post-graduate degree about dubbing and subtitling¡

I ask to some people about their preferences: dubbing or subtitling?

Teenagers prefer subtitling films. They think that in subtitled films they can listen the original sound.

What about children? They prefer dubbing films because is easier to listen the voices than read the subtitles.

TASK V

RESIDENT EVIL 3: EXTINCTION

This exciting film is an action and horror movie. It is based on a videogame. Its setting is in USA, in the future, after a virus turned people into zombies.

The Umbrella Corporation was trying to develop a cure. Since Alice (Milla Jovovich) was captured by the Umbrella Corporation, she was part of a biogenetic experiment. She could escape but now she has special abilities. Alice and a group of survivors were trying to reach Alaska. They believed that the virus was not spread in Alaska.
Alice and the survivors arrived to Las Vegas. The Umbrella Corporation located them and sent zombies. They tried to capture Alice, but she was too strong. Alice and the survivors went to the Umbrella Laboratory and stole a helicopter. The survivors flew to Alaska. Alice fought with Dr. Isaacs and won. Then she decided to face the Umbrella Corporation with an especial weapon: an army of her clones

I think it is a good movie. I like it even I had never seen the previous movies. This film is a good combination of horror, action and science fiction. This movie is the third of a trilogy about a video game but I think it won’t be the last.

TASK VI

How visual media affect people?

When we wake up we watch TV. Then, when we have breakfast we read the newspaper. Throughout the day, we read a magazine, go to the cinema, watch many kinds of TV programs, etc. Since we wake up until we go to bed, visual media is in our day. Visual media is very important in our lives. They are not only a way of entertainment, they can be used in school, like a therapy or if we want to learn another language.

There are many kinds of visual media. Some media can be helpful for people: Documentaries, news, movies, scientific magazines. On the other hand, visual media like soap operas and reality TV programmes have more disadvantages than advantages.

Benefits of the visual media:

Visual media can be used in education. There are movies and documentaries about medicine, science, art, history, math and other fields of study. Visual media allows students to increase their knowledge and also makes the class more interesting.

If we are studying another language we can use movies or TV programmes to practice our listening and learn more vocabulary.

Visual media is a good option in our free time if we choose correctly. We can know what’s happening in the whole world, watching TV or reading a magazine or a newspaper. Also, we can learn something about other countries and cultures

Disadvantages of the Visual Media:

Visual media can be an addiction. Some people need to watch TV all the time and also replaces their activities because there is their favorite programme on TV. In many families TV is like another family member. TV is present when they have breakfast, do their activities, and even when they go to the bed. Visual media also affect their decision and their opinions.

The amount of violence in visual media is incredible. TV programmes, movies and magazines can scare people or affect them. A lot of TV can be dangerous and decrease our abilities and attention capacity

Nowadays everybody has a TV at home, got to the cinema in their free time and read a newspaper or a magazine once a week at least. That’s why visual media is very important in our lives. Visual media influences in our opinion and culture. Visual media can be useful if we choose correctly.

TASK III

Leonardo Da Vinci

He was an artist, a paintor an engineer, etc. He was a genious¡ One of his paintings, the Last Super, is considered like one of the greatest paintings in the world. I think he was important because he did many discoveries in many areas.

Louis Pasteur

He was born in France. He researched about vaccines, microbiology, technologies like fermentation, wine making, etc. I think he was important beause he was the first who used a vaccine in a person.

Bill Gates

Computers are very important in our lives. One of the persons that revolutionated computers world was Bill Gates. He made software. He invented microsoft. This software is used by all the computers. Bill gates is one of the richest men in the world.

TASK IV

Legends, ghosts, calacas and mystery have been part of Mexican culture.


Colonial cities have enchantment and mistery with a special envirinmrnt and each city has particular legends or common myths.



"La llorona" is the most famous Mexican legend. There are many versions about this legend. Maybe this legend has it origin in the conquer . Maybe the mysterious woman was a Mexican goddess that announced terrible events. Another version says that "La llorona" is "La Malinche" soul, regretful to betray Mexican people during Mexican conquer. Maybe this ghost is the soul of a murdered woman or the soul of a woman who killed her sons.




There is another legend about a woman. She was called "la Mulata de Cordoba". Many people though that she was a witch or that she had a pact with the devil. She was jailed by the "Santa Inquisicion", but she escaped. The legend says that she drew a boat in the wall with a coal. The jailer saw when she jumped to the paint in the wall and escaped sailing in the boat.



A particular of Mexican culture is the "Catrina". She is an elegant "calaca" that symbolizes the privileged class of the last century. Now the Catrina is an elegant symbol of death and a nice costume for a party.

TASK II

Darely likes sports. She often does exercise maybe twice a week. She always goes to the school so she never cooks. She likes to be with her friends. She sometimes goes out with them and every week she goes to the park with her family.

Orlando watches TV one hour a day. He always studies and does homework. He never cooks because he always goes out for dinner and he eats in his school. He usually walks to school. He sometimes goes to the cinema.

Levi watches TV two hours a day. He rarely does exercise, but he likes to watch sports on TV He occasionally goes to the cinema. He sometimes cooks. He often goes holiday.

TASK I

My name is Adriana Cortazar Martinez I am a teacher of Biology and Chemistry. The reasons that led me to take this course were that I want to be better in english. I think that English is very important in my career. I expect from this course to learn more vocabulary, practice my listening and speaking.

If some theme is dificult I will try to apply the tools according my learning style. I took a course about learning and teaching styles. It was very interesting but it was too short..
